映画の原作本を読むようになりました。
「風と共に去りぬ」「ゴッド・ファーザー」「戦争と平和」などの分厚い本から
「シェルブールの雨傘」「オリエンタル急行殺人事件」などの読みやすい本まで・・・
本当に高校１年生から結婚してここに来るまで１５年ほど
本を手にしてないことがありませんでした。
高校卒業時には３年間で最も本を図書館で
借りた人の一人に選ばれ表彰されました。
初めは確かに映画の原作ばかり読んでいたのですが
そのうち歴史や哲学の本まで読むようになり
生きるということに欲が出てきました。
そして大学に行きたいと思うようになりました。
勉強しなくても学年で一番になりたくて入った商業高校でしたが
そこではそろばんや事務実技のクラスが多く
英語、数学などは普通高校で１年間で教える事を３年間で教えていました。
受験のためにはとても足りないレベルでした。
１年の初めにそれに気づいた私は焦りました。
参考書を買い自分で受験勉強を始めました。
でも習った事もないことを自分一人で勉強出来るわけありません。
普通高校に行っていればクラスで先生から学んで
それを自宅で復習するだけでいいのに
学校では商業科目を学んでそれ以外に自分で勉強して
普通高校の生徒以上の勉強が必要になりました。
中学の父兄会で担任のいう事を素直に聞いて
普通高校を受験していれば
こんな苦労はなかったのに・・・
２年生になった時
同志社大学を 卒業したばかりの先生がやってきました。
塚本先生という先生で彼は私や数人の生徒が
大学入試のために苦労している事を知り
放課後に特別クラスを持って
受験のための英語と古文を教えてくれるようになりました。
そのおかげで入試に備える事が出来ました。
といっても偏差値がかなり低い大学でないと無理でした。
私は私立梅光女子大に行きたかったけど
かなりレベルが高かったので
滑り止めに市立北九州大学の外国語学部の２部（つまり夜間）を受けました。
実は梅光に合格して入学金も払った後
弟が高校入試に失敗して予備校に行く事になり
私は家計を助けるために授業料の安い北九大に行く事になりました。
写真は放課後のクラスをしてくれた塚本先生を
体育祭で私たちのクラスが「刑事コロンボ」にさせたものです。
もう一人の竹下先生は「エマニュエル夫人」です。
私は口を手で押さえて笑っています。

After I fell in love with movies,
I started to read the books of those movies.
I read those thick books like "Gone with the Wind","Godfather", "War and Peace"
and those easy books like "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg", " Orient Express".
About 15 years from 10th grade to the time I came here to get married,
I never put the books down.
Actually I was recognized as the one who most checked out the books
from the school library for 3 years in high school.
I started to read the movie books first, then the historical books or philosophical books.
I got stronger purpose in my life.
Then I realized that I needed to go to college for my future.
I went to commercial high school, because I could be No.1 in my class without studying hard,
but they didn't teach high level English and Math to take the college entry exam.
They taught us abacus and other commercial subject.
If I had listened to my class room teacher when I was in Junior high school,
I would have been in regular high school, and studying the subject for the college entry exam.
When I was in 11th grade, a young teacher who just graduated from Doshisha University, the famous college in Kyoto, came to our school.
He found out that some students like me were struggling to study to prepare for the college entry exam.
His name was Mr. Tsukamoto.
He started the special class after school to teach us English and Ancient Japanese.
The class really helped us to prepare for the exam.
I took the exams for Baiko Women's University, private school
and the night class of Kitakyushu University, public school.
I passed both exams , and I paid the admission fee to Baiko.
Then I found out that my brother failed the high school exam and needed to go to Yobiko.
That's a special remedial school to prepare for high school or college entrance exams.
My parents had to pay a lot for him to go tho that school.
So I gave up on going to Baiko, and went to night school at Kitakyushu University.,
because the tuition was much cheaper.
I went to Commercial high school, because I didn't want to study hard.
But I had to study harder than the students in regular high school,
and went to a not so great university at night.

Our class dressed Mr. Tsukamoto as "Columbo", the old TV detective,
and the other teacher Mr. Takeshita as "Madam Emmanuel".
I was laughing and covering my mouth.
