魔法使い / The Witch

船を降りておかで生活を始めて
私が結婚するまでの２０数年間
会社の社宅のほかに３軒の借家に引っ越しました。
その４軒とも祖母の家のすぐ近くでした。
だからずっと祖母といられました。

社宅に住んでる頃小さな家だったので
冷蔵庫も小さくて苦労しました。
買い物に行った後、買った物が入らずに
祖母の家の冷蔵庫に入れてもらって
料理する前にそれを取りに行かされていました。

社宅から祖母の家まで１００メートルくらいで
いつもひとっ走りさせられました。
持ってくるもののリストを紙に書くのが面倒でいつも
「鮭と卵と・・・・」と言いながら走っていました。
我が家と祖母の家の間に
おばあちゃんが一人で住んでいました。
そのおばあちゃんはとても小さくて痩せていて
髪は真っ白で笑うと歯は１本もないように見えました。
私は彼女のことを「絶対魔法使いのお婆さんだ」と思っていました。
薄暗くなって会うとちょっと怖いような・・・
何故かいつも私がお使いで祖母の家に向かって走ってると
必ず外にいて私に話しかけてきました。
そのたびに私はお使いのものが何だったか忘れて
また家に戻って聞きなおしていました。

ゴミ箱の上に座ってるのも変ですが。
隣は文房具と駄菓子やをかねたお店でした。
反対の隣も駄菓子やさんでしたから
私たち子供にとっては「天国」のような祖母のうちでした。

After we moved out of the boat, we lived in an  apartment that father's company owned for the employees.
Then we moved to a rental house 3 times in 20 years.
All those houses were really close to my grandmother's home.

The apartment was small and we couldn't buy a big refrigerator, so we had a small one.
My mother always had a hard time to put away the food that she got from the grocery stores.
She always asked my grandmother to keep the food until she cooked.
I was the one my mother always asked to go get the food from my grandmother's home.
I didn't bother to write down what she wanted me to get.
I just kept saying, " salmon, eggs......" while I was running.
There was an old lady living between my home and my grandmother's home.
She was so small and skinny with all gray hair and a toothless smile.
I thought she must be a witch.
I don't know why, but she was always outside
when I was running to my grandmother's home for my mother's errand.
She stopped me and asked some questions.
After I talked her, I always forgot what I should get from my grandmother's home.
So I had to go back home to ask my mother again.

Next door was a small store selling school supplies and candies.
The other side of my grandmother's home was also a candy store.
It was Heaven for children like us.
