清子の幼少期 / Seiko's toddler years

私は母方の祖父母にとって初孫でしたので随分と甘やかされました。
私には５歳違いの叔母がいるのですが彼女はきっとやきもちを焼いたと思います。
祖父母はその当時ではまだ珍しかったベビーベッドなどを買ってくれたそうです。（竹製でしたが・・・）
また雛人形の段飾りも貰いました。日本の湿気でほとんどはカビがひどくてボロボロになり
今ではお内裏様とお雛様しかなく、それをここに嫁ぐ時にもって来ました。
長女の私はそのように雛人形を持っていますが次女の妹には何もありませんでした。
何故か幼いながらもいつも妹に申し訳なく思っていました。
七五三の着物も妹は私のお下がりでした。

私の最初の言葉は「あっちゃん」だったそうです。妹のことです。
そして自分のことを「せいこ姉ちゃん」と呼んでいたそうです。
実は７～８歳までそのように自分を呼んでいた事を覚えています。
学校の友達の前でそのように自分を呼んで恥ずかしくなり呼ばないようになったのです。
記憶のある限り私はいつも「私はお姉ちゃんなんだから、しっかりしないと」と思っていました。
何時も何時も妹を守っていた事を覚えています。

I was the first grandchild for my mother's parents.
They spoiled me so much.
I'm sure my aunt, who is just 5 years older then me, must be jealous of me when I was a baby.
They bought a baby bed for me even though it was rare in those days in Japan.
It was made of bamboo.
Also they celebrated my "First girl's Day (March 3rd)" with festival dolls.
With the humidity in Japan, those dolls fell apart, and I have just the Prince and Princess doll left.
When I came here, I brought them and they are in my Japanese room here.
But my sister was a second grand-daughter, so she didn't get any.
I have felt so sorry for her that I was born first since I was really little.
We have a special ceremony at the shrine on November 15th,
for the children who are 3, 5 and 7 years old.
This picture was when I was 3 years old.

My first word was "Acchan'.
That's my sister's nick name.
I was calling myself "Sis Seiko".
I remember that I was still calling myself that until 7 or 8 years old.
One day, I called myself "Sis Seiko" in front of my friends, and got embarrassed, and stopped doing that.
As long as I remember, I was always thinking "I am the oldest, so I have to be a good example to my siblings."
I remember I always tried to protect my sister.
