1 / The Trip to Japan 1999 Part 1

We took Ken and Kay to Japan and stayed for 6weeks in summer 1999.
Dave could take just 3 weeks vacation,
so we went to Japan together and Dave came home by himself after 3 weeks.

My parents talked to the principal of the elementary school in their neighborhood,
and asked them to let Ken and Kay go to the school for a month.

Kay was 5th grad, so we decided to put both of them in 5th grade class.

The principal Mr. Mikajiri and the class room teacher Mrs. Matsushita
took care of my children very well.

Since then we send a Christmas card every year to them.
Last year we got a letter from Mr. Mikajiri's daughter.
She said he pass away last summer.

We see Mrs. Matsushita every time we go back to Japan, and
she came to visit us in America three times so far.

The first picture was when they did a group presentation
in science class. They were kind enough to include Ken and Kay.

The second picture was at PE class.
In Japan, they have swimming lesson during PE
at elementary school.
That class made Ken and Kay so happy.

The third picture was at Home Management class.
It was cooking class and all parents were invited to the class so
I had a chance to meet mothers that day.

The fourth picture was at lunch time.
In America, the students go to cafeteria to eat lunch.
But in Japan, they eat lunch in the class room.
Also they have assignments to serve lunch to class mates.
Kay was assigned to serve lunch that day.
She was wearing an apron and hat to serve.

The fifth picture was right after lunch.
They brush their teeth after lunch.
That surprised Ken and Kay.

The sixth picture was cleaning time.
In Japan the students have to clean their own class room and campus.

The seventh picture was taken during lunch recess.
The whole class played softball together everyday.

The eighth picture was at the class room with the whole class.
They were so friendly to Ken and Kay while they were there.

The ninth picture was when they came home from an
over-night camp with whole 5th and 6th grade class.
Ken and Kay must have had a great time because they came home tired.
